The United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday sent a Thank You message to Saudi Arabia for lowering oil prices through more production. The oil prices fell by about 7 percent on Tuesday to the cheapest level since October 2017.
“Oil prices getting lower. Great! Like a big Tax Cut for America and the World. Enjoy! $54, was just $82,” Trump tweeted. “Thank you to Saudi Arabia, but let’s go lower!”
The thank message comes just a day after the US President released a statement saying he will stand by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman despite evidence that he was behind the brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi that took place in October. The journalist was lured to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 and killed. The CIA has reportedly found strong evidence that Saudi leader, who has especially close contacts with the Trump White House, was involved in Khashoggi’s death.
The statement sounded like Trump was essentially ignoring the killing of Khashoggi considering the fact that Saudi Arab is more important to the US’s strategic and commercial interests. He argued that punishing Saudi Arabia by canceling Saudi arms deals worth billions of dollars won’t be good for the country.
In his statement, Trump mentioned that breaking with Saudi Arabia would cause oil prices to go through the roof. While he did call out the brutal slaying of Khashoggi as a horrible crime, he refused to accept that the Saudi prince had anything to do with it.
“It could very well be that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event,” the US President said. “Maybe he did and maybe he didn’t!”
He went on to mention that necessary action has been taken against 17 Saudis who have been confirmed to be involved in the murder.
