Sudan’s Al-Burhan Says Talks On New Sudan Political Framework Ongoing

Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Military Council head General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Sunday confirmed that talks on a new political framework for the country were being held, but he warned former President Omar al-Bashir’s party not to interfere with the military or in politics, reported The Alarabiya News.

Burhan led a coup a year ago that halted the country’s transition to elections. Omar al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan for three decades, was removed from power by the military in April 2019 following mass protests against deteriorating economic conditions in the country.

While addressing soldiers at an army base north of Khartoum, Burhan said that the military has compiled its views on a draft constitution, leading its way towards a new agreement with the main political parties.

He said Sudan’s military is ready to join hands with anyone who wants to rescue the country, but, he warned that he would not agree to anything that led to the breakup of the military.

Since the coup, Bashir’s banned National Congress Party members have staged a comeback in public life and the civil service.

On Sunday, Burhan confirmed that the military does not support Bashir’s National Congress Party. He stressed that the army will not allow the NCP or Islamists to return to power.

“We warn those that want to hide behind the army, and specifically the National Congress Party and the Islamist Movement,” he said.

“Go away, 30 years are enough, give people a chance,” he added later. “Don’t hold hopes that the army will bring you back.”

Burhan said everyone who was part of the organization that led to the overthrow of the regime in 2019 will be made a part of the transitional process paving way towards elections, adding that other political groups have been included as well in order to increase consensus.
