Amazon Ropes In Cardiologist Maulik Majmudar To Move Deeper Into Healthcare Field

Amazon has reportedly hired a world-famous cardiologist, Maulik Majmudar as it plans to move deeper into the healthcare field. Majmudar, who earned his medical degree at Northwestern University, is the associate director of the Healthcare Transformation Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also a lecturer and an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.

The doctor himself took to Twitter to announce that he is moving to an exciting and challenging role at Amazon. Majmudar noted that the one and only reason that he is taking up the new opportunity is the possibility of making a truly meaningful impact on the health and wellbeing of hundreds of millions of individuals throughout the world. However, he did not disclose what kind of role he will be taking on at Amazon.

Notably, Majumdar has advised technology companies in the past including Biofourmis, a startup focusing on monitoring patients remotely, HiLabs, which focuses on health care data mining and Quanttus, a company that tried to develop a wrist-based app that monitors blood pressure but failed eventually.

Amazon has mostly kept quiet about its foray into health care. It looks like the US retail giant is currently on a health-care hiring spree, as it has roped in a number of healthcare experts including Taha Kass-Hout, former FDA chief health information officer, and Martin Levine, primary care expert. The company also announced back in June that it is buying the online pharmacy PillPack, which has pharmacy licenses in all 50 states.

Notably, Amazon has a number of different teams working on health care. While its business group is trying to sell medical supplies to hospitals and clinics, the company’s cloud team is selling AI and other advanced technologies to health-care companies. There’s also a wellness team working within Alexa that is focusing on developing healthcare voice applications.

As per reports, the company is in internal discussions to open primary care clinics at its main office to bring down the costs of health care for its employees through its partnership with J.P Morgan and Berkshire Hathaway.
