Donald Trump Hails US Court’s Ruling Against Obamacare

The United States President Donald Trump called out the Federal court’s decision against Obamacare as “a great ruling for our country.” He even praised the judge who handed down the decision.

Judge Reed O’Connor of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas on Friday said that Obamacare, formally known as the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA), was unconstitutional based on its mandate requiring that people buy health insurance. He noted in a 55-page opinion that the rest of the law cannot be separated from that provision and therefore was invalid.

The court’s decision was announced a day before the end of a 45-day sign-up period for 2019 health coverage under the law. The decision is highly likely to be challenged and head its way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Republicans have been opposing Obamacare, which the then President Barack Obama signed into law in 2010, calling it a costly and unneeded government intrusion into Americans’ lives. Trump also campaigned against the Act in 2016.

The White House applauded the ruling by O’Connor and said that the law in question will remain in place pending its expected appeal to the Supreme Court.

“Once again, the president calls on Congress to replace Obamacare and act to protect people with preexisting conditions and provide Americans with quality affordable healthcare,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

Trump now wants to sit and talk with the Democrats to chalk out new healthcare plans for the people of the U.S.

“It’s a great ruling for our country,” Trump told reporters during a visit to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on Saturday. “We will be able to get great healthcare. We will sit down with the Democrats if the Supreme Court upholds, reported NBC News.

According to the U.S. government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, about 11.8 million American have enrolled in 2018 Obamacare exchange plans.
