The Kenyan health ministry on Sunday announced that it has recorded 234 new COVID-19 cases that take the country’s total tally to 246,530 cases, reported CGTN Africa.
According to the Kenyan health ministry’s data, 492 people recovered from the disease and 9 people succumbed to the disease on Sunday. The total recoveries now stand at 237,295 and the total fatalities from COVID-19 now stand at 4,989.
A total of 3,351,109 COVID-19 vaccines had been administered across the country, 2,492,173 being first doses while 858,936 are second doses.
The East African country has ramped up vaccinations as it is planning a full reopening of its economy. The vaccination rate has been bolstered by the recently increased arrival of vaccines and an increase in vaccination centers.
On Saturday, Kenya received a shipment of about 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines. The consignment was received by Susan Mochache, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Mochahe said more vaccine supplies are expected to arrive in the near future through the global COVAX platform.
Earlier this month, the Kenyan health ministry earlier had announced its plans to fully vaccinate 30 million people against COVID-19 by the end of 2022.
Kenya has already received 5,146,780 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines and more are expected in the days ahead.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), only 13 African countries have reached the COVID-19 vaccination target. WHO has set a target to have countries fully vaccinate more than 10 percent of their population against COVID-19 by the end of September this year.
The list of countries that have reached the vaccination target includes Seychelles that has vaccinated 72 percent of its population, Mauritius with 55 percent vaccinated, Morocco with 44 percent, and Tunisia with 21 percent of its people vaccinated against COVID-19.
