Libya: Khalifa Haftar’s LNA Launch Airstrike In Zawiya
The East Libyan forces led by Commander Khalifa Haftar on Sunday used warplanes to launch an airstrike in the city of Zawiya, west of Tripoli, reported Middle East Monitor.
According to the report, citing an unnamed source, the attack targeted a blacksmith workshop east of the city. No casualties were reported.
The Haftar led Libyan National Army (LNA) launched a military campaign in April to capture Tripoli from the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA).
In related news, Ahmed Mitig, the deputy head of the Libyan Presidential Council, made an appeal to the United States government to exert pressure on its allies and keep them away from meddling in Libya by backing up Khalifa Haftar’s attack on Tripoli, reported The Libya Observer.
“We urge the US administration to use its leverage to end the support provided by Egypt and Saudi Arabia to Haftar,” Mitig told Fox News.
Mitig is currently on a formal visit to Washington D.C. He met with a number of senators, including Republican Lindsey Graham, and discussed the US policy toward Libya.
“I’m going back to Libya’s capital Tripoli with a message from the US that says the White House is in support and standing by the Government of National Accord as the only legitimate government in Libya,” Mitig told reporters.
He told Fox News that his government wants political leadership from the US, not financial or military support.
Meanwhile, a group of US politicians wrote a letter to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday urging President Donald Trump’s administration to clarify its policy on Libya.
In the letter, the eight members of the House of Representatives urged the White House to clearly reject a military offensive launched by renegade Libyan commander Haftar to seize the capital, Tripoli, from the country’s internationally recognized government.
