Libyan Commander Khalifa Haftar To Meet Donald Trump This Month- Report

A new report suggests Libyan eastern forces Commander Khalifa Haftar is all set to meet the United States President Donald Trump at the White House sometime later this month.

According to a report coming from the Libyan Express, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, the meeting between Trump and Haftar is currently in the final stages. The meeting is expected to take place in Washington DC on June 15.

The sources claim that the meeting will discuss the current war for Tripoli and how the US should help Haftar terminate terrorism in Tripoli.

Back in April, Trump spoke to Haftar and supported the latter’s offensive on Tripoli as a form of fighting terrorism, knowing that the fighting is against the UN-backed and US-supported Government of National Accord.

In related news, Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) on Thursday destroyed a drone that carried out several airstrikes on the outskirts of Tripoli, at the city’s Mitiga International Airport, the LNA General Command’s press service director Khalifa Obeidi announced, reported Sputnik News.

“The drone, which was attacked by the Libyan air forces at the Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli, carried out numerous airstrikes,” Obeidi said. “We followed it earlier and have announced today that it had attacked our troops in suburbs of Tripoli without causing us damages. After monitoring [the drone’s movements], our planes acted in coordination with the operational headquarters and chased it until it arrived and landed at the air base at the Mitiga International Airport. It was destroyed by a direct hit.”

Libya has long been gripped by military conflict since the overthrow and killing of Libya’s long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The country is now facing a war-like situation as the LNA, led by Khalifa Haftar, launched an offensive against the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in April to retake Tripoli from the control of the GNA.
