South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Kim Jong Un wants a second summit with US President Donald Trump
South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Thursday said that his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong Un wants a second summit with US President Donald Trump to be held as early as possible in order to speed up the denuclearization process. Moon added that Kim wants to bring an official end to the 1950-53 Korean War by the end of the year.
Moon said he and Kim mostly discussed how to break an impasse and restart nuclear talks between Pyongyang and Washington during the three-day summit held in Pyongyang.
“Chairman Kim expressed his wish that he wanted to complete denuclearization quickly and focus on economic development,” Moon said during a news conference in Seoul, after returning from the summit. “He hoped the second summit with Trump would take place in the near future, in order to move the denuclearization process along quickly.”
Moon had earlier announced that Kim is ready to permanently dismantle key nuclear missile facilities and other installments in his country including the Yongbyon nuclear site and the Tongchang-ri missile engine test site in the presence of experts from relevant nations if the United States takes reciprocal action.
Notably, Trump and Kim met in Singapore earlier this year in June to discuss the North’s missile and nuclear tests. After the summit, the North Korean leader promised to work toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. But talks between the countries stalled in recent weeks after President Trump became unsure of whether Kim was following through with pledges. He even canceled U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s planned visit to North Korea.
Thankfully, now, Kim is showing efforts to turn the Korean peninsula into a land of peace without nuclear weapons and nuclear threats. He had even sent a positive personal letter to the US President seeking a follow-up meeting.
Meanwhile, Pompeo on Thursday said the US is ready to restart negotiations with Pyongyang, with the aim of denuclearizing North Korea by 2021.
