Sudan: Protestors Threaten To Go On A One Million People March Protest On Thursday
Sudan protestors have threatened to go on a one million people march protest on Thursday if in case the military council leaders don’t pave a way for the transfer of power to a civilian administration. The announcement follows a meeting in Cairo attended by African heads of state on Tuesday. The leaders agreed to give Sudan’s ruling military council three months to implement a peaceful transition of the government.
The protestors consider the Transitional Military Council (TMC) to be an extension of Bashir’s regime. They describe the military leaders as representing the old regime of removed al-Bashir in the new government.
The TMC took over from President Omar al-Bashir after the army ousted him on April 11. Amid pressure created by mass protests, the council has agreed to accept a civilian government of technocrats to run the country during an interim period of up to two years until a presidential election is conducted in the country.
Three members of Sudan’s ruling military council, Lieutenant General Omar Zain al-Abdin, Lieutenant General Jalaluddin Al-Sheikh, and Lieutenant General Al-Tayieb Babikir, reportedly resigned on Wednesday amid heightened tensions with the protest organizers after TMC said it reached agreement on most demands with protest leaders.
The resignation came after the 10-member military council had invited the protest leaders for a meeting after the leaders of the umbrella group leading the protest movement suspended talks with the army rulers on Sunday.
“We have an agreement on most demands presented in the document of the Alliance for Freedom and Change,” Lieutenant General Shamseddine Kabbashi, spokesman of the ruling military council, told reporters after the meeting.
The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) and its supporters, who organized the four months of demonstrations that drove al-Bashir from power earlier this month, are likely planning to announce its own civilian transitional council during mass rallies on Thursday.
