US Secretary Of State Mike Pompeo Says His Trip To North Korea Was Very Productive

While the relationship between the US and China is turning worse owing to the escalating trade war, the Donald Trump administration is doing every bit to ensure North Korea fulfills its commitment to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang for two hours before flying to South Korea Sunday afternoon for a two-day visit.

Addressing the journalists in Seoul alongside South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday, Pompeo said that the North Korean leader has agreed to open up the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site to inspectors. North Korea claims that it began dismantling the nuclear testing site in May, but international observers have not yet been allowed to examine the site to verify claims.

When asked about a possible date for the inspection, Pompeo said that the date will be worked out soon as they just need to work out logistics.

“As soon as we get it logistically worked out,” Pompeo said. “Chairman Kim said he’s ready to allow them to come in. There’s a lot of logistics that will be required to execute that.”

Pompeo told reporters that they are already close to scheduling a second summit between Trump and Kim. The two leaders had their first meet in Singapore earlier this year.

Overall, Pompeo described his North Korean trip as productive and also posted a photo of himself with Kim on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Kim Jong Un is expected to meet with the leaders of Russia and China as part of an ongoing diplomatic effort to reduce tensions on the Korean peninsula. There is also a possibility of Kim holding a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
